"Is there REALLY a market for mobile payments in the US?"
On October 5, 2009, mPay Connect produced event #2 of the Mobile Payments Series in Silicon Valley. This event is now available for video download.
The event was co-hosted by Harvard Business School Tech Club and The Wharton Club of Northern California at Google's headquarters with over 120 attendees. Joining Menekse Gencer of mPay Connect were five panelists to discuss the opportunities and challenges in the US market around mobile payments.
To download a copy of the 1-hour event video, purchase the $50 download fee.
You will be sent the zipped video via SendSpace service to your email for viewing. (Note: The video is approximately 280 megabytes.)
The U.S. is the #1 country in payments revenues and remittance flows outbound, and has failed to reach any significant commercial success in mobile payments to date compared with emerging markets. Is the U.S. doomed never to reach significant adoption levels of mobile payments? Is the American market cursed by its own success in card and PC penetration or is there a market that has yet to be tapped?
Menekse Gencer, Founder of mPay Connect www.mpayconnect.com, is the Producer and Moderator for this event. We are extremely fortunate to have amassed top-notch panelists for this event who bring the perspectives of executives in financial services, mobile operators, and research firms for this discussion who address both the banked and unbanked customer segments.
The panel includes:
- Dion Lisle – EVP Citi Growth Ventures – Citigroup
- Arjan Schutte - Associate Director, The Center for Financial Services Innovation
- Dhidha J. Timona – President, Shaka Mobile, MNVO targeting immigrants remitting to Africa
- Scott Shaw – Board Member AliasWire, Previously Senior Executive VP Kessler Financial Services
- Gabriel Torres – Vice President of Business Development, Affinity Global Services

What we do
Consulting Services: mPay Connect provides strategic, product planning, and business development consulting services to clients interested in providing mobile payments to their customers. mPay Connect is experienced in serving clients with banked and unbanked customers world-wide.
Training and Education: mPay Connect runs the Mobile Payments Series Initiative in Silicon Valley which addresses critical mobile payments topics by drawing on expert panelists worldwide. In addition, mPay Connect is partnered with the Mobile Money Transfer Conferences and Mobile Money Africa and will be running upcoming mobile payments workshops in Dubai , the Philippines, and Nigeria.
Our objective
From rural villages in Kenya and Tanzania to urban transit stations in Hong Kong and South Korea, mobile payments adoption is transforming how people interact with money. Our belief is that the ubiquity of mobile devices, coupled with electronic money movement, will change the landscape of financial services. This change will positively impact economies, businesses, and the livelihood of people in fundamental ways. To that end, we seek to bridge the gap between efforts in emerging and developed markets / banked and unbanked consumers, by connecting ideas, businesses, and people globally to drive mobile payments efforts forward.
